Folklore

This English-language course offers an introduction to the study of folklore, or folkloristics, through both a literary and anthropological lens. With a focus on folk narratives/traditional stories, this course will introduce many of the leading theories of folkloristics including examinations of folk narrative genres (myths, legends, fairytales, fables), common character types as well as investigate why, where, and how folk narratives were told. Students will study narratives cross-culturally comparing Korean stories with the stories of other cultures. Other forms of folklore will be explored such as jokes, riddles, and proverbs as well as modern forms such as digital folklore like memes.
